Focused Shockwave Therapy
for Erectile Dysfunction – Sunshine Coast
Advanced German-Engineered Technology | Confidential Men's Health Consultations Over 10 Years of Clinical Experience
Erectile Dysfunction – Understanding Your Treatment Options
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common men's health condition that can affect confidence, relationships and quality of life.
At Shockwave Therapy Centre on the Sunshine Coast, we specialise in low-intensity focused shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction, providing a non-invasive treatment option for appropriately selected men.

Our clinic uses advanced German-engineered FOCUSED shockwave technology – not radial pressure wave devices – and has more than a decade of clinical experience in shockwave therapy.
We understand that erectile dysfunction can be a sensitive concern. Our approach combines confidential consultations, individual assessment and clear information about the available treatment options.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man has persistent difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity.

Several factors may contribute, including:
-
Reduced blood flow to the penis
-
Diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
-
Hormonal changes
-
Certain medications
-
Neurological conditions
-
Previous pelvic surgery
-
Stress, anxiety and psychological factors

One common form is vasculogenic erectile dysfunction, where problems with blood vessel function affect the ability to achieve or maintain an erection.
Because ED can sometimes be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease, assessment by a GP or urologist is important.

How Does Focused Shockwave Therapy Work for Erectile Dysfunction?
Low-intensity focused shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic pulses delivered to selected areas of penile tissue.
The acoustic energy creates mechanical stimulation that may influence cellular signalling and biological processes associated with vascular function.

Research has investigated several proposed mechanisms:
Angiogenesis: Biological signalling associated with the development of new blood vessels.
Vascular function: Potential changes in local circulation and blood vessel activity.
Tissue responses: Mechanical stimulation that may influence cellular processes involved in tissue maintenance and adaptation.
These mechanisms remain under investigation. Although some clinical studies have reported improvements in erectile function, it has not been established that treatment reliably regenerates blood vessels or nerves in individual patients.

What Does the Scientific Research Say?
Low-intensity shockwave therapy has been studied as a potential treatment for erectile dysfunction, particularly for men with vascular-related ED.
Some clinical trials and systematic reviews have reported modest improvements in erectile function. However, results vary between studies, and treatment protocols have not been standardised.
The European Association of Urology provides a weak recommendation for low-intensity shockwave therapy in selected men with mild vasculogenic erectile dysfunction and certain other carefully assessed patient groups.
Long-term effectiveness remains uncertain, and not every patient will benefit.
At Shockwave Therapy Centre, we believe patients should understand both the potential benefits and the limitations of the available research before deciding whether to proceed.

Why Do We Use FOCUSED Shockwave Technology?
Not all treatments advertised as shockwave therapy use the same technology.
Focused Shockwave Therapy
Focused shockwave technology generates acoustic waves that converge towards a selected treatment region.
This allows controlled delivery of acoustic energy using dedicated focused shockwave equipment.

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy
Radial pressure wave devices generate mechanical pulses that spread outward from the applicator, with their greatest mechanical effect generally occurring closer to the skin surface.
These technologies are physically different, and research findings from one type of device cannot automatically be applied to another.

At Shockwave Therapy Centre, we use genuine German-engineered focused shockwave technology for our erectile dysfunction treatment program.
The use of focused technology does not, by itself, guarantee a better clinical outcome.

What Happens During Treatment?
1. Your Confidential Consultation
Your appointment begins with a private discussion about your symptoms, medical history, medications and previous treatments.
Dr Uwe Schwiersch, DPT (Physiotherapist), will explain the procedure and discuss whether low-intensity focused shockwave therapy may be suitable.
Where appropriate, we recommend consultation with your GP or urologist to investigate underlying causes of erectile dysfunction.
2. Focused Shockwave Application
A specialised applicator delivers low-intensity acoustic pulses to selected treatment areas of the penis.
A coupling gel is used to assist transmission of the acoustic energy.
Treatment is non-invasive and does not require surgical incisions or injections.
3. Treatment Duration
The shockwave application generally takes approximately 20 minutes, depending on the individual treatment protocol.
Most patients tolerate the procedure, although temporary tingling, pressure or mild discomfort may occur.
4. After Your Appointment
Patients can generally resume normal daily activities following treatment.
Temporary local discomfort, redness or sensitivity may occur.
Your clinician will explain any relevant precautions and discuss how treatment response will be assessed.

Who May Be Suitable for Focused Shockwave Therapy?
Low-intensity shockwave therapy may be considered for selected men with erectile dysfunction, particularly where vascular factors are involved.
Suitability depends on:
-
The underlying cause and severity of ED
-
Medical history and cardiovascular health
-
Previous treatments and their effectiveness
-
Current medications
-
Treatment expectations
-
The available clinical evidence

Men with ED caused primarily by hormonal, neurological, medication-related or psychological factors may require different or additional treatment approaches.

Benefits and Limitations of Focused Shockwave Therapy
Non-Invasive Treatment
Treatment is delivered externally without surgical incisions or penile injections.
Drug-Free Procedure
Shockwave application itself does not involve medication, although existing prescribed treatments may still be required.
Short Appointments
Treatment sessions are generally brief (max 30 min) and do not usually require a prolonged recovery period.
Individualised Clinical Assessment
Each patient receives an assessment to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Potential Improvement in Erectile Function
Some studies have reported improvements in erectile function in selected men, particularly those with mild vasculogenic ED.
However, improvement is not guaranteed, and the durability of any benefit remains uncertain.

Discreet, Private and Professional Men's Health Care
We understand the importance of privacy when discussing erectile dysfunction.

At Shockwave Therapy Centre, appointments are conducted in private treatment rooms, and all personal health information is handled confidentially in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.
You do not need to disclose the reason for your appointment to reception when making an initial enquiry.
During your consultation, Dr Uwe Schwiersch, DPT (Physiotherapist), will explain the available options and answer your questions in a respectful, professional environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is focused shockwave therapy a cure for erectile dysfunction?
Some studies have reported improvements in erectile function, but treatment does not guarantee a cure or permanent results.
Is focused shockwave therapy painful?
The procedure is generally well tolerated. Some men experience temporary tingling, pressure or mild discomfort during treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
At Shockwave Therapy Centre, our erectile dysfunction treatment program generally consists of 12 sessions, following an individual assessment.
Published studies have used different treatment schedules, and there is currently no universally established protocol for low-intensity shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction.
Your clinician will explain the proposed treatment schedule, costs, available evidence and realistic expectations before treatment begins.
Can focused shockwave therapy replace erectile dysfunction medication?
Not necessarily. Established medical treatments remain important options. Do not stop prescribed medication without discussing it with your doctor.
Is focused shockwave therapy suitable for every man with ED?
The underlying cause of erectile dysfunction is an important factor in treatment selection. A medical assessment is recommended before considering shockwave therapy.
How long do results last?
The duration of any improvement varies. Long-term effectiveness has not been conclusively established.
What is the difference between focused and radial shockwave therapy for ED?
Focused shockwave technology concentrates acoustic energy within a selected treatment region, whereas radial pressure wave devices deliver more widely spreading mechanical pulses. These are different technologies, and their clinical evidence should be assessed separately.
