Advanced German-Engineered Technology | Confidential Men's Health Consultations Over 10 Years of Clinical Experience
Peyronie's Disease – Understanding Your Treatment Options
Peyronie's disease is a condition that can cause penile curvature, discomfort and pain during erections. For some men, it may also affect sexual function, confidence and quality of life.
At Shockwave Therapy Centre on the Sunshine Coast, we provide confidential consultations and focused shockwave therapy for selected men experiencing pain associated with Peyronie's disease.
Our clinic uses advanced German-engineered focused shockwave technology — not radial pressure wave devices — and has more than a decade of clinical experience in shockwave therapy.
We understand that Peyronie's disease can be difficult to discuss. Our approach combines privacy, individual assessment and clear explanations of the available evidence and treatment options.

What Is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie's disease occurs when fibrous scar tissue, known as plaque, develops within the tunica albuginea, the connective tissue surrounding the erectile chambers of the penis.
This can affect how the penis expands during an erection, potentially causing curvature, shortening, indentation or discomfort.
Symptoms may include:
-
New or increasing penile curvature
-
Pain during erections
-
A palpable lump or area of firmness
-
Changes in penile shape or length
-
Difficulty with sexual intercourse
-
Erectile dysfunction
-
Emotional distress or reduced sexual confidence
Symptoms and severity vary between individuals. Not every man experiences pain, and not every case requires procedural treatment.

What Causes Peyronie's Disease?
The exact cause is not fully understood.
Peyronie's disease is thought to involve abnormal healing and scar tissue formation, sometimes following repeated minor injury or mechanical stress to the penis.
Potential contributing factors include age, genetic susceptibility and certain connective tissue conditions.

The condition is generally described in two stages.
Active Phase
During the active phase, penile pain may be present and the curvature or shape may continue to change.
Stable Phase
During the stable phase, penile curvature generally stops progressing and pain often reduces or resolves.
Understanding the stage of the condition is important when considering treatment.

A GP or urologist can assess the diagnosis, disease stage and available management options.

How Does Focused Shockwave Therapy Work for Peyronie's Disease?
Focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic pulses delivered to selected treatment areas.
The acoustic energy produces mechanical stimulation within the targeted tissues.
Researchers have investigated whether this stimulation may influence local tissue responses and pain-related processes.
However, the precise mechanism responsible for any pain relief in Peyronie's disease remains uncertain.
The most important distinction is that shockwave therapy may help manage penile pain in selected patients, but it has not been reliably demonstrated to straighten penile curvature or reduce plaque size.
We believe patients should understand this limitation before deciding whether to proceed.

What Does the Scientific Research Say?
Clinical studies have investigated extracorporeal shockwave therapy for Peyronie's disease, including its effects on penile pain, curvature and plaque size.
Some controlled studies have reported improvements in penile pain.
However, research has not demonstrated reliable improvements in penile curvature or plaque size.
The European Association of Urology (EAU) provides a weak recommendation for extracorporeal shockwave treatment to manage penile pain during the active phase of Peyronie's disease. It strongly recommends against using shockwave therapy to improve penile curvature.
The American Urological Association (AUA) similarly advises that shockwave therapy may be offered for penile pain, but should not be used to reduce curvature or plaque size.
Pain associated with Peyronie's disease may also improve naturally over time, making it important to weigh any potential benefit against treatment costs, inconvenience and possible side effects.
At Shockwave Therapy Centre, we discuss the evidence, limitations and realistic treatment expectations during your consultation.

Why Do We Use FOCUSED Shockwave Technology?
Not all devices advertised as shockwave therapy use the same technology.

Focused Shockwave Therapy
Focused shockwave devices generate acoustic waves that converge towards a selected treatment region.
This allows controlled delivery of acoustic energy using specialised focused shockwave equipment.

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy
Radial pressure wave devices produce mechanical pulses that spread outward from the applicator, with their greatest mechanical effect generally occurring closer to the skin surface.
These technologies differ in their physical characteristics and energy distribution.
At Shockwave Therapy Centre, we use genuine German-engineered focused shockwave technology.
However, the use of focused technology does not guarantee better outcomes, and evidence from studies using different shockwave devices should not automatically be considered interchangeable.

What Happens During Treatment?
1. Your Confidential Consultation
Your appointment begins with a private discussion about your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments and individual concerns.
Dr Uwe Schwiersch, DPT (Physiotherapist), will explain the procedure and discuss whether focused shockwave therapy may be appropriate.
Because Peyronie's disease requires accurate diagnosis and assessment of penile curvature, we recommend evaluation by a GP or urologist before treatment.
2. Focused Shockwave Application
If treatment is considered appropriate, a specialised applicator is used to deliver controlled acoustic pulses to selected areas.
A coupling gel assists transmission of the acoustic energy.
The procedure is non-invasive and does not involve surgical incisions or injections.
3. Treatment Duration
Treatment sessions are generally brief. The exact duration, number and frequency of appointments depend on the proposed treatment protocol.
Your clinician will explain the treatment schedule before you decide whether to proceed.
4. After Your Appointment
Patients can generally return to normal daily activities following treatment.
Temporary discomfort, redness, tenderness or bruising may occur. Less commonly, bleeding or an increase in pain has been reported in clinical studies.
Your clinician will explain the relevant risks and precautions before treatment.

Who May Be Suitable for Focused Shockwave Therapy?
Focused shockwave therapy may be considered for selected men experiencing penile pain associated with Peyronie's disease, particularly during the active phase.
Suitability depends on:
-
Confirmation of the diagnosis
-
Whether penile pain is present
-
The stage of Peyronie's disease
-
Severity and progression of symptoms
-
Erectile function and other medical conditions
-
Previous treatment and individual goals
-
The available evidence and potential risks
Men primarily seeking correction of penile curvature, plaque reduction or restoration of penile length should discuss other treatment options with a urologist.

Benefits and Limitations of Focused Shockwave Therapy
Non-Invasive Procedure
Treatment is delivered externally without surgical incisions or penile injections.
Potential Penile Pain Relief
Some clinical studies have reported improvements in pain in men with Peyronie's disease.
However, pain may also improve naturally, and individual treatment responses cannot be predicted.
Short Treatment Appointments
Shockwave therapy is generally delivered in outpatient appointments without a prolonged recovery period.
Individualised Assessment
Treatment suitability is considered in the context of your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals.
Important Treatment Limitations
Focused shockwave therapy has not been reliably shown to correct penile curvature, dissolve plaques, restore penile length or cure Peyronie's disease.
It should not replace appropriate urological assessment or other indicated treatment.

Other Treatment Options for Peyronie's Disease
Management depends on the stage and severity of the condition.
Options that may be discussed with a urologist include:
-
Monitoring symptoms where treatment is not immediately required
-
Appropriate pain management during the active phase
-
Penile traction or vacuum devices in selected cases
-
Treatments for associated erectile dysfunction
-
Specialist injection therapies where suitable
-
Surgery for selected men with stable, functionally significant curvature
Shockwave therapy is only one possible option for managing pain and is not necessarily the most appropriate treatment for every patient.
