Understanding Myofascial Pain

Myofascial pain involves discomfort arising from muscles and surrounding connective tissues. Some people develop sensitive areas commonly described as trigger points, which may cause local pain or discomfort felt in nearby regions.

Symptoms can include:

  • Persistent muscle aching or tightness

  • Tender or sensitive areas within muscles

  • Pain associated with certain movements or positions

  • Restricted movement and reduced activity tolerance

  • Recurrent discomfort in the back, neck, shoulders or hips

Muscle pain can have several causes, making an accurate assessment important.

How Can Focused Shockwave Therapy Help?

Focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy delivers acoustic pulses to selected tissue depths.

It has been investigated as a treatment for certain myofascial pain conditions, with some studies reporting improvements in pain and function.

Depending on the clinical presentation, areas considered for assessment may include:

  • Quadratus lumborum: Deep lower-back muscle pain

  • Gluteus medius and surrounding muscles: Buttock and lateral hip discomfort

  • Iliopsoas region: Selected deep hip-related pain presentations

  • Shoulder and upper-back muscles: Persistent muscle tenderness and discomfort

Treatment of deeper anatomical regions requires particular care because important nerves, blood vessels and organs may lie nearby. Not every muscle is an appropriate shockwave target.

Individualised Treatment

Our physiotherapist assesses your symptoms, movement, medical history and possible contributing factors before considering treatment.

Focused shockwave therapy may be combined with manual therapy, movement rehabilitation, strengthening or other appropriate physiotherapy approaches.

Research into its mechanisms is ongoing, and it has not been established that shockwave therapy permanently eliminates trigger points or resets nerve pathways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can shockwave therapy reach deeper muscles?

Focused devices can deliver acoustic energy to selected depths, subject to device capabilities and anatomical safety considerations.

Can it help chronic lower-back pain?

It may be considered for selected muscle-related presentations. Persistent lower-back pain requires assessment to exclude other causes.

Is the treatment painful?

Temporary discomfort or tenderness may occur during and after treatment.
